Value of the Census
Learn more about the purpose of the Census and why participation is important.
The Census is the largest data collection in Australia and provides some of the country’s most valuable statistics. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.
Community groups, not-for-profit organisations, businesses and governments use Census data to make important decisions. Census data informs planning for schools, health care, transport and infrastructure. It's also used to help plan local services for individuals, families and communities.
Why the Census Test matters
Before each Census, it’s important to test how we'll run it. The Census Test will take place on Tuesday 5 August 2025.
It’s important that everyone selected participates to ensure the Census Test reflects a broad cross-section of people and communities in Australia.
We’re testing our data collection processes and operational systems to ensure they're ready to deliver a positive, safe and secure Census experience that's easy to complete.
The Census Test will include questions on a new topic and changes to questions on existing topics. These changes are the result of extensive public consultation and ABS review. The review was undertaken to ensure information collected in the Census remains relevant as Australia changes and provides high-quality data where it’s needed most. Read more about the outcomes of the 2026 Census topic review.
Your participation will help us improve the Census process so our next Census in 2026 is easier to complete and produces high quality statistics. Data collected in the Census Test is for testing purposes and will not be released.
