Why the Census matters

The Census is the largest data collection in Australia and provides some of the country’s most valuable statistics. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.

Census data informs decisions about transport, schools, health care and infrastructure, helping to plan local services for individuals, families and communities. For example:

  • Libraries use Census data to understand languages spoken in local communities so they can stock in-language books for their readers.
  • Supermarkets use Census data to inform the products to stock for their customers, including international foods.
  • Broadcasters use Census data to decide which in-language radio and media services are needed for their listeners.

Support and translated materials

Closer to the 2026 Census, information and help will be available to assist everyone participate. This will include:

  • Translated information flyers
  • Audio resources
  • Video guides
  • In-person help through Census Pop-up Hubs and fill in form sessions
  • Phone support with the Census Contact Centre and the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National)

This will support people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to understand and complete the Census.
